What Is a Tornado Bong?

A tornado bong, sometimes called a tornado fish bowl, is a cylindrical water pipe which typically has a turbine or cyclonic perc on top of an rectangular perc assembly. These percs usually come in a oblong shape of a circle or in straight angled tubing which channel the airflow to produce that famous tornado shaped appearance. A tornado bong may contain a single cyclon disc, multiple cyclon discs, or a combination of several other disc types including; spiral tube, squarish tube, polygonal disc and others. Often these are crafted from metal and some even have perforated holes for expanding the air flow when needed.

There are a few features that determine the quality of the tornado bong. One such feature is the water level in the outer surface area of the disc. More specifically, the water level at the top of the cyclone perc assembly must not be higher than the water level at the bottom of the assembly. This surface tension is important because it will help keep the tornado bong stable when in use and prevent it from falling over when releasing the wind. A water level that is too high also means that there is too much pressure buildup in the pipe which in turn can cause problems with the assembly itself.

Another important feature of the tornado bong is its design. Some bongs have a "U" shape at the lower portion of their surface. This indicates that the pipe will be able to support the weight of one or more bongs. Typically, these bongs are constructed using the most durable materials available. The "U" shape will provide an enhanced smoke trail for those attempting to perform smoking tricks with the instrument. However, the shape does come with its drawbacks because the surface can quickly become compressed if a heavy object is placed on the end of the pipe.

Other characteristics that help determine the quality of the tornado bongs available include the distance between the holes drilled into the top of the unit. Although some people consider six inches as a good spacing, only four to six inches is generally recommended. The reason for this distance is that it is difficult to get all of the water in the showerhead perc assembled without hitting something. Showerheads are generally made from glass or plexiglass. If it has any decorative hardware, it will add to the weight of the instrument which will affect its stability.

An important feature of the tornado bong is the type of water pipe or showerhead perc that it uses. While many models use standard two-inch pipes, others will require pipes which are four and a half inches in diameter and up. In cases where the pipe is made out of stainless steel, the weight of the water pipe may be an issue. A two-inch pipe may be too light, which causes the bong to tip over when filled with water.

This type of perc, however, can still handle most smoke instruments without a problem. Some of the newer models of cyclone bongs have innovative fastening systems. These systems include an outer cylinder made out of steel that is attached to the tube. On the inner part of this "umbrella" is a wire mesh which allows a bit of water to drip through without getting caught. Anytime smoke is added to this mesh, it can be directed through the holes while the water pipes flow smoothly.
